Architecture is the most practical and dangerous of the arts. All the other arts we have to live with...but architecture is not a thing that we only have to live with–it is a thing we have to live in. We live with it as Jonah lived with a whale. Jonah could not see the monster and there is a great deal to be said for living in the most hideous house you can see in the landscape. That is the one place you will be unable to see it.

As the daughter of a midwestern USA pastor with 100 acres on which to build a new church complex, I've saved up 'good church ideas' for years. This is a great idea. A Catholic church in my hometown had a stump as the base of their altar, and full on tree trunks as main pillars (the sanctuary space altogether isn't as inspiring as these elements; but to their credit, the plan is to build a new sanctuary space and this space become the annex): http://www.stnicholascenter.org/church_gallery_popup.jsp?church_sakey=1167&display=3
